Alma 17

17:1-3 How were the sons of Mosiah prepared to teach the Lamanites? Why are fasting and prayer still asked of us today?

“There are certain blessings obtained when one searches the scriptures. As a person studies the words of the Lord and obeys them, he or she draws closer to the Savior and obtains a greater desire to live a righteous life. The power to resist temptation increases, and spiritual weaknesses are overcome. Spiritual wounds are healed. …Some individuals falter because they fail to open the books, others because they read causally.” ~ MJ Bateman

17:5 Why do the faithful sometimes suffer big trials?

“So often in life a deserved blessing is quickly followed by a needed stretching. Spiritual exhilaration may be quickly followed by a vexation or temptation. Were it otherwise, extended spiritual reveries or immunities from adversity might induce in us a regrettable forgetfulness of others in deep need. The sharp, side-by-side contrast of the sweet and the bitter is essential until the very end of this brief, mortal experience. Meanwhile, even routine, daily life provides sufficient sandpaper to smooth our crustiness and polish our rough edges, if we are meek.” ~ NA Maxwell

17:9 How can we become instruments in God’s hands like the sons of Mosiah?

17:13 How do we trust in the Lord?

“This life is an experience in profound trust—trust in Jesus Christ, trust in His teachings, trust in our capacity as led by the Holy Spirit to obey those teachings for happiness now and for a purposeful, supremely happy eternal existence. To trust means to obey willingly without knowing the end from the beginning (see Proverbs 3:5-7). To produce fruit, your trust in the Lord must be more powerful and enduring than your confidence in your own personal feelings and experience.” ~ RG Scott

17:14 Where did the philosophies of murder for gain originate? See Moses 5:31-33 also. Where in our day do you see people or entities willing to cause or allow harm for gain? What can we do to not be a part of it?

17:15 How important is it for us to understand Heavenly Father’s plan of salvation and Jesus’ role in it?

“The center of the plan is the Lord Jesus Christ. Reject or ignore Him, and the great plan of happiness cannot function in your behalf.” ~ LA Porter

17:28-29 What can missionaries and members do to have gospel teaching moments?

“The servants of the Lord pray and petition the heavens for teaching moments, for those special occasions when the power and goodness of God and His word can be manifest. The spirit of readiness and receptivity must be had by those outside the faith before the message of truth can be delivered and accepted.” ~ McConkie and Millet
